All about Energy Drinks

I just saw a stock full of red bull cans in the store and it took me back to the time when we were kids. I remember the ones who used to drink frooti were considered kids and the one who like to red Bull , hellrock were considered the daring once.

We have all grown up now but there is still one thing common that is red bull the ones who used to have it, still have it but in larger amounts.

People have these energy drinks so as to increase the energy levels of their body. Why do the energy level of our body hit bottoms ? The reason for this drop in energy level  is skipping sleep,  skipping work out and having our favourite pathetic food.

Let us talk about everybody’s favourite energy drinks pay $2 and you will get a body full of energy.

Energy drinks are beverages containing caffeine, herbs and vitamins that claim to make you alert and provide energy.

What is inside these drinks?

1. Caffeine - These drinks contain high levels of caffeine. It is more than the recommended level for children and adolescents . One or two cans and you are above your daily recommended limit. But who can stop with just two cans a day?
Caffeine seems to be more beneficial for those who don’t use it on a regular basis. When combined with taurine, the effects seem to be additive.

2. Carbonated water- It is not a great contributor in providing you energy but it’s a great agent to leave you bloated.

3. Sucrose /glucose – The sugar content ranges between 25 gram and 83 gram in most of drinks. Glucose is the major energy source needed by our body for better functioning but too much of it just gives larger waistline and cavities rather than energy.

4. Sodium citrate – It is used as a preservative and provides that tangy taste. It is one of the greatest rivals of your tooth  enamel.

5. Taurine-This is a sulfur containing amino acid that we can make from methionine and cysteine. It’s found mainly in muscle tissue and can:

  1. Help to regulate water, mineral & homocysteine levels
  2. Help contribute to bile acid formation
  3. Improve muscle contractility and protect against muscle stress in animals.
  4. Help to prevent atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus, but results are mixed. Taurine has actually worsened lipid panels in animals.

A dose of nearly 5 grams might be needed to notice any effect. Most energy drinks contain much less.

Consuming taurine from food/supplements seems to have minimal impact on blood levels, yet strangely, it still concentrates in organs and tissues. Taurine is highly water soluble and excreted by the kidneys.

Those who probably shouldn’t experiment with taurine:

  1. Anyone with kidney disease. It won’t be readily excreted and supplementation can lead to accumulation in tissues (and lots of dizzy spells).
  2. Anyone who doesn’t like itching. Supplementing taurine can cause itching.
  3. Those with epilepsy. Supplementing taurine can cause nausea, dizziness, and a headache

6.Vitamin B- If you think these carbonated drinks are accurate to fill your body with vitamin B then think once again. Also our body can absorb only some amount of vitamin B, rest leave the body with pee .

7.Glucuronolactone - It is a naturally occurring glucose metabolite and may help reduce glycogen breakdown during workouts. This may improve alertness. It is produced naturally, but in small amounts.

HEALTH RISKS

Health risks of consumption of too much of health drinks
1. Caffeine intoxication
2. Caffeine withdrawal symptoms
3. Caffeine overdose
4.Cardiovascular problems
5.Sleeping disorder
6.Calcium deficiency
7.Obesity
8.Electrolyte disorders
9. Increase in blood pressure
10. Type 2 diabetes
11. Cardiac arrest
12. Niacin Overdose: Niacin (Vitamin B3) is placed in most energy drinks at levels that cause no harm and can even be therapeutic. However, if a person is taking additional supplements containing Niacin, overdosing on the vitamin is possible when consuming energy drinks in addition to those supplements. Symptoms include; Skin flushing, dizziness, rapid heart rate, vomiting, itching, gout, and diarrhea.
